Bengaluru, July 24: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that the government has decided to use the technology developed by the Wipro to check the increasing air pollution in the cities including the capital city Bengaluru.

After holding a discussion with Wipro Chairman Azim Premji at his office in Vidhana Soudha here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that the Wipro has developed a technology to control the air pollution. In this meeting, it was discussed to control the air pollution effectively by using this technology across the state, he added.

Zero cultivation technology

The Azim Premji Foundation has been working in different states on zero cultivation. It was also discussed with him about adopting this method in the state to help the farmers. He has announced in the Budget about introducing zero cultivation method for which Rs 50 crore was reserved. The Azim Premji Foundation has successfully implemented the zero cultivation method in Andhra Pradesh and over 6 lakh farmers have involved in that practice. Now, the Foundation has come forward to implement it in Karnataka, he said.

Azim Premji has said that he would join hands with the government to control air pollution in the city. IN order to have proper coordination, Forest department additional chief secretary would be appointed as the nodal officer, he said.

Azim Premji said that the Wipro has been working with the Andhra Pradesh government regarding agriculture. The Foundation is willing to work with the Karnataka government in this aspect. Wipro has been working in education sector in association with the Education department. It has developed various government schools. The Foundation is ready to join hands with the government in the development, he said.

No renovation of ministers’ quarters

No Ministers including PWD Minister HD Revanna were renovating their government bungalows. The report that Revanna was renovating the house spending crores of rupees was just baseless news. A new building was constructed on the premises of the Kumara Krupa Guest House. Because of the heavy rains, the compound wall of a nearby house was collapsed. Repair work of the wall and laying of a pipeline from the house of the Minister was taken up for which the government order was done in last December. The work was not taken up during this government, he said.

His government has checked the renovation of government bungalows spending crores of rupees. In case, if anybody proposed to renovate the bungalows, the Finance department would not give permission, the CM said.

Bengaluru (PTI): The Karnataka government has issued directions to municipal corporations across the state to regulate and prohibit feeding pigeons in public places, citing serious public health concerns.

Deputy Secretary to Government V Lakshmikanth has written to the Urban Development Department requesting it to issue directions to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and all municipal corporations to take immediate steps to implement the measures.

In an official note dated December 16 issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department and released to the media on Wednesday, the department said uncontrolled feeding of pigeons in public places has resulted in large congregations of birds, excessive droppings and serious health concerns, particularly respiratory illnesses linked to prolonged exposure to pigeon droppings and feathers such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis and other lung diseases.

"The commissioner, the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Commissioners and chief officers of other municipal corporations shall take necessary action to mitigate the causes of dangerous disease spread by pigeon and enforce specified guidelines in their respective jurisdiction," the note said.

According to the department, these include a prohibition on feeding pigeons or causing pigeons to be fed in areas where it may cause nuisance or pose a health hazard to the public. Pigeon feeding shall be permitted only in designated areas in a controlled manner, subject to certain conditions.

"The designated areas may be selected in consultation with stakeholders. The responsibility for upkeep of the designated areas and compliance to the directions shall be taken up by some charitable organisation or an NGO. The feeding in designated areas shall be permitted only for some limited hours in the day," it said.

The note further stated that authorised officers of local authorities shall issue on-the-spot warnings and may impose fines for violation of the order, or lodge complaints to prosecute offenders under Sections 271 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 272 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

It also directed local authorities to conduct public awareness campaigns, including the display of signboards, banners and digital messages, explaining the health hazards associated with pigeon droppings and feathers, the content of the regulatory directions and penalties for violations, and alternative humane methods of bird conservation that do not endanger public health.
