Leeds: Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s light-hearted stump-mic comment during Day 5 of the first Test match between India and England at Headingley has caught the attention of cricket fans and quickly went viral on social media.

As India pushed hard for a breakthrough in the final day’s first session, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna operating from opposite ends, Gill was heard on the stump mic saying, “Ek taraf Mohammed hai, ek taraf Krishna, dono tabahi machayega” — a remark that playfully referred to the names of his bowlers while expressing confidence in their ability to dismantle the English batting line-up.

The phrase, loosely translated to "On one side there’s Mohammed, on the other side Krishna — both will wreak havoc," gained traction across social platforms, with fans appreciating the humour and timing during an intense match situation.

Gill’s comment came as India introduced Krishna into the attack after Jasprit Bumrah’s opening spell, with Siraj already operating from the other end. Though the remark brought smiles online, the Indian team had little to cheer about on the field in that session, as England’s openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put up a solid century partnership under cloudy skies, frustrating the Indian attack and pushing their side closer to a challenging target of 371.

Match Overview

England were chasing 371 after India posted 364 in their second innings, led by centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. The hosts had earlier been bowled out for 471 in their first innings, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming a five-wicket haul. India managed a narrow six-run lead in the first innings after their own strong total of 477, which included hundreds from captain Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Pant.

The match is also notable for being Gill’s first as captain in Test cricket following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format. The young batter marked the occasion with a century in his debut match as skipper, becoming only the fifth Indian captain in history to do so.
