Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, is poised to become the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to sources. Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman, has informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia's chair Mike Baird, that he will not seek a third term and plans to step down when his current tenure ends in November.

Barclay's decision comes amid reports of Jay Shah's intent to assume the role. Shah, who has garnered support from key cricket boards in England and Australia, is expected to secure the necessary votes to be appointed as the new ICC chairman.

If confirmed, Shah will become the third Indian to hold the ICC's top position, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012). At 35 years old, Shah would also become the youngest chairman in the history of the ICC.

The ICC election process, which requires a simple majority of nine votes out of 16, is expected to conclude with Shah taking over the role officially on December 1, 2024. Shah currently has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before he must take a mandatory three-year cooling-off period, as stipulated by the BCCI constitution.

Barclay's decision to step down was officially confirmed by an ICC spokesperson, who mentioned that nominations for the next chair must be submitted by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held to determine the new chairman.
