Beijing, Sep 22 : China has shut down more than 4,000 porn and other websites containing "harmful" information in the past three months.

The "clean-up" campaign was jointly launched by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications and the State Administration of Press and Publication in May.

By the end of August, authorities nationwide have amended over 120 relevant violations and ordered 230 enterprises to rectify irregularities, removing or filtering more than 147,000 pieces of harmful information, Xinhua news agency quoted an official statement.

The campaign, targeting content in online novels that spread improper values, vulgarity or obscenity as well as those involving copyright infringement, included measures such as relevant websites' self-checks, authorities' inspections and criminal investigations.

The statement said that such measures will be intensified in the future to ensure a healthy and clean online literature environment.

Mandya: A round of inspection by the police and health officials of Mandya brought to light a sex determination and female foeticide racket that is active in the Health Department quarters in Pandavapura taluk of the district, much to the shock of citizens.

Three people accused to be involved in the racket were taken into custody by the police officers. Pandavapura Taluk Hospital ambulance driver Anand, outsourced D-Group staff member Ashwini and another woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, were detained.

Driver Anand's government residence was found to be the 'office' for the racket.

Mandya District Health Officer Dr. Mohan, Taluk Health Officer Dr. Aravind and police officers, who conducted the raid in Pandavapura, rescued a pregnant woman from Mysuru who had visited the Health Department quarters for an abortion and confiscated the equipment being used for abortions.
