Washington: The Democratic Party’s Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the first two Muslim women to serve in the United States Congress, have won re-election to the US House of Representatives.
Tlaib, the first woman of Palestinian descent in the US Congress, was re-elected on Tuesday for a fourth term to represent Michigan, gaining strong support from the large Arab-American community in Dearborn, as reported by Al Jazeera.
A vocal critic of US military support to Israel in its war on Gaza, the 48-year-old defeated Republican James Hooper.
Ilhan Omar, a former refugee and Somali American, secured her seat for a third term in Minnesota, where she represents the strongly Democratic 5th District, which includes Minneapolis and a number of suburbs.
The 42-year-old is also a sharp critic of Israel’s war on Gaza.
In a social media post, Ilhan Omar thanked her supporters for their dedication to her election campaign, affirming that their hard work had paid off. “This is a victory for ALL of us who believe that a better future is possible. I can’t wait to make you all proud over the next two years,” she wrote.

Hyderabad (PTI): Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday said the Congress government has accorded top priority to the welfare and development of the Muslim community in the state.
Speaking at the 'Iftar' event hosted by the state government here, he observed that Ramzan is the holy month of spiritual purification.
"We must foster brotherhood and live together in communal harmony," Reddy said while cautioning that some political forces are attempting to create communal tension by dividing people in the country.
"This government is yours. I am your brother. All must stand unitedly to take Telangana and the country forward. Your prayers are very important for the government. Some people try to create divisions amongst us and we should not fall into it," he said.
He highlighted substantial allocation of funds to the Muslim minorities in every government initiative.
Telangana ministers including Mohammad Azharuddin, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi were among those who were present on the occasion.
