New Delhi, Jul 7: India-born Gita Gopinath became the first woman and second Indian to feature on the 'wall of former chief economists' of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The first Indian to achieve the honour was Raghuram Rajan who was Chief Economist and Director of Research of IMF between 2003 and 2006.
Gopinath was appointed as IMF Chief Economist in October 2018 and was later promoted as the IMF's First Deputy Managing Director in December last year.
"Breaking the trend I joined the wall of former Chief Economists of the IMF," she said in a tweet, which also displayed the wall of former chief economists with her photograph.
Gopinath had served as the first female chief economist of the Washington-based global lender for three years.
Gopinath's research has been published in many top economics journals. Prior to her appointment as IMF Chief Economist, she was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics in the economics department of Harvard University.
Before joining the faculty of Harvard University in 2005, she was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.

Mumbai, Mar 8 (PTI): The womenâs wing of the NCP (SP) has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to grant immunity from punishment against âone murderâ as women want to kill the âoppressive mentalityâ and ârapist mindsetâ.
Rohini Khadse, the womenâs wing president of the Sharad Pawar-led party, in the letter written on the occasion of International Womenâs Day, pointed out the recent gangrape of a 12-year-old girl in Mumbai to highlight rising crimes against women and press for their demand.
âWe, on behalf of all women, are demanding immunity (from punishment) to commit one murder,â Khadse said in the letter, aimed at targeting the state government over the law and order situation in the state.
She also cited a survey report stating that India was the most unsafe country for women as crimes, including kidnapping and domestic violence, were happening against them.
âWe want to kill the oppressive mentality, the rapist tendency, the inefficiency of law and order⊠We hope our demand will be granted after giving it a serious thought,â Khadse added.
Reacting to the letter, Shiv Sena minister Gulabrao Patil said Khadse should tell whom she will murder. However, his party colleague Manisha Kayande offered a more sympathetic view.
Kayande, an MLC, said Khadse is probably talking about killing certain tendencies in some people. This feeling must be stemming from âthe recent incidentsâ, she said.
