Tehran: The Iranian state media has confirmed that Major General Hossein Salami, the head of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in an Israeli airstrike early Friday. The strike reportedly targeted the IRGC headquarters.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency announced: “Major General Hossein Salami, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was martyred in the Israeli regime’s attack on the IRGC headquarters.”

Salami was a central figure in Iran’s military and political establishment, overseeing not only conventional forces but also Iran’s extensive ballistic missile arsenal and regional proxy networks. His death marks one of the most significant Iranian losses in decades.

Israeli officials believe the strike also eliminated several other senior figures in the Iranian military hierarchy, including Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, top IRGC commanders, and senior nuclear scientists. This operation appears to be part of a broader IDF campaign, with reports suggesting that Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, had previously carried out covert sabotage operations targeting Iran’s air defense systems and long-range missile infrastructure.

The attack follows orders reportedly issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz earlier this week to prepare for a direct strike against Iran. Labor and defense ministries have since been placed on emergency footing.

The incident comes amid renewed nuclear tensions and rising fears of a broader regional war. In the wake of the strike, the United States has reportedly begun evacuation protocols for its personnel at Middle East embassies and military bases.
