Motel fire kills mother, 5 of her children
Washington, July 29 : A mother and her five children were killed on Saturday as a fire swept through a motel in the US state of Michigan.
Kiarre Curtis, 26, and her five children aged from two to 10 likely succumbed to smoke inhalation, Xinhua quoted the Berrien County sheriff's office as saying.
Curtis' husband and a one-year-old child survived, and all eight of the family were in the same room. Eight people were treated for smoke inhalation and released from a hospital. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The Cosmo Extended Stay Motel in Sodus Township was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after receiving a 911 call at 1:45 a.m. local time.
The two-story motel is described as a place for people with low incomes to "get back on their feet".
The motel is off Interstate 94 in the southwestern corner of Michigan, roughly 160 km from Chicago. Local media quoted authorities as saying that 27 rooms were occupied and 90 percent of the property was damaged by smoke, fire or water.

Hindutva leader Manju Kola stabbed during ‘compromise meeting’ at Malpe; Five arrested
Udupi: Manju Kola, husband of former Udupi City Municipal Council Vice-President Lakshmi Manjunath and a Hindutva organisation leader, was stabbed during a meeting held to settle a dispute related to a love affair at Malpe on Tuesday night.
Police have arrested five accused in connection with the case.
According to information available, Manju Kola had reportedly called for a compromise meeting near Malpe beach in the Palimaru area on Tuesday evening to resolve an issue involving a couple. During the discussion, a heated argument broke out and a youth allegedly stabbed Manju Kola.
He sustained injuries to his abdomen and collapsed. He was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Udupi for treatment.
Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that five accused have been arrested in the case. As per preliminary investigation, the incident appears to have occurred due to personal reasons. He clarified that there is no communal angle to the incident and urged the public not to spread rumours.
The injured Manju Kola is out of danger and his condition is stable, the SP said.
