TEHRAN, Iran (AP/PTI): Noted Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were stabbed to death in their home by an unknown assailant, state media reported Sunday.
The official IRNA news agency quoted Hossein Fazeli, a judiciary official, as saying that Mehrjhi and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were discovered dead with knife wounds in their necks.
Fazeli said the director’s daughter, Mona Mehrjui, found the bodies when she went to visit her father Saturday night at the home in a suburb about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of the capital, Tehran.
The report said authorities were investigating though the wife had complained about a knife threat on social media in recent weeks.
Mehrjui , 83, was known as cofounder of Iran’s film new wave in the early 1970s that mainly focused on realism. He received many awards, including a Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Seashell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival 1993.
Mehrjui studied in the cinema program at the University of California, Los Angeles in the early 1960s.

Dubai: Buildings in central Dubai shook after loud explosions were heard and a thick cloud of smoke was seen rising over the city’s financial district on Friday. Authorities confirmed that that no injuries were reported.
An AFP correspondent reported hearing a loud double blast that rattled nearby structures and left a large plume of black smoke hanging over a central area. Sirens were later heard from the direction of Sheikh Zayed Road which is one of the city’s main thoroughfares.
In a statement posted on X, the Dubai Media Office said debris from a “successful interception” caused a minor incident on the facade of a building in central Dubai. “No injuries have been reported,” it said.
According to reports the incident occurred in the Dubai International Financial Centre and the building sustained damage. Police have cordoned off the area following the blasts.
A day earlier, authorities had reported a “minor drone incident” in the Al Bada’a area after explosions were heard in downtown Dubai. Officials had then stated that there were no injuries.
