Dhaka: Days after protests in Bangladesh led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, students have now turned their focus on the Supreme Court, demanding the immediate resignation of all judges, including the Chief Justice.

Hundreds of protesters, mainly students, have surrounded the Bangladesh Supreme Court, issuing a one-hour ultimatum for the Chief Justice to step down. Reports indicate that the Chief Justice may have fled the premises as tensions escalated.

The protests were ignited by a full-court meeting called by the Chief Justice without consulting the newly formed interim government. This move led to accusations from student protesters that the judiciary was involved in a conspiracy, sparking widespread outrage.

The scheduled full-court meeting was abruptly canceled as the situation intensified. Despite this, the protesters continued their siege of the Supreme Court, demanding accountability from the judiciary.

These fresh protests follow a student-led uprising against reservation rules in government jobs, which culminated in Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus taking charge of a caretaker government. The unrest has already claimed the lives of at least 450 people in over a month of deadly protests that ended Sheikh Hasina's autocratic rule.

Hasina, one of Asia's longest-serving leaders, resigned and fled Bangladesh on August 5 under intense pressure from millions of protesters demanding her departure.

The interim government, led by Yunus, was appointed on Thursday, and an election is constitutionally required within 90 days, although the timeline remains uncertain.
