Taiwan's president pledges to accelerate building of air defence system in face of China threat
Taipei (AP): Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te on Friday pledged to accelerate the building of a “T-Dome” air defence system in the face of the threat from China.
Lai said his government would establish a rigorous defence system with high-level detection and effective interception.
The T-Dome, or Taiwan Dome, was an apparent reference to the Iron Dome system that Israel has developed.
Lai, speaking at a Taiwan National Day celebration, also pledged to increase defence spending to more than 3 per cent of GDP and to reach 5 per cent by 2030. GDP, or gross domestic product, is a measure of the size of the overall economy.
Taiwan is a self-governing island off China's east coast that the Chinese government claims as its territory and says must come under its rule.
Lai called Taiwan a “hub of peace and stability” in the Indo-Pacific region, drawing a distinction with China's one-party state.
“Democratic Taiwan ... will strive to maintain the status quo, protect peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and promote regional prosperity and development,” Lai said.
China and Taiwan split during a civil war that brought the Communist Party to power in China in 1949. The defeated Nationalist Party forces fled to Taiwan, where they set up their own government.
The Chinese military regularly sends fighter jets and warships into the skies and waters off Taiwan and has staged major military exercises in the area in recent years.
The United States, like most countries, does not recognise Taiwan as a country, but it supplies the government with military equipment for its defence and opposes any use of military force by China to settle its dispute with Taiwan.

4 workers die after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad
Dhanbad (Jharkhand) (PTI): At least four workers died after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Saturday, a police official said.
The incident took place at Moonidih coal washery in the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
"Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation," Putki police station in-charge Waqar Hussain told PTI.
The incident took place when coal slurry was being loaded into trucks by workers, during which a large chunk of slurry fell and trapped several workers underneath, officials said.
The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri, Dinesh Bauri, Deepak Bauri, and Hemlal Gope.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased and local villagers placed the bodies in front of the washery gate and began a protest.
They demanded compensation, jobs for dependents and action against those responsible for the incident.
Police and administration officials are trying to pacify the protesters, an official said.
