New York, May 11 (PTI): US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised the "strong and unwaveringly powerful" leadership of India and Pakistan for reaching a ceasefire, saying their legacy is greatly enhanced by their brave actions.
India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control and International Border on Saturday.
“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead (led) to the death and destruction of so many, and so much,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions," he said.
"I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!”
Tensions between India and Pakistan soared after the Indian Armed Forces hit terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan have agreed to stop all firings and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 5 pm on Saturday.
The brief announcement by the foreign secretary came shortly after US President Trump said India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire".

Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP president and MLA B. Y. Vijayendra said the party’s victory in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry has strengthened the leadership of Narendra Modi and sent out a strong national message.
Speaking to the media at Jagannatha Bhavan, the state BJP office in Bengaluru, he said this was the first election under the party’s national president Nitin Nabin, and the outcome holds significance.
Vijayendra said Amit Shah is widely being referred to as the party’s election strategist across the country. He added that Shah’s planning also played a key role in the victory.
Referring to West Bengal, he said party workers there deserve appreciation, stating that they had faced continuous pressure for decades and have now brought an end to it.
Speaking about the by-elections in Davanagere South and Bagalkote constituencies, Vijayendra said the result in Davanagere South is expected to be decided by a narrow margin. He admitted that the party did not expect a setback in Bagalkote.
He said that although the Congress had won there earlier, the BJP was confident that voters would support them this time. He added that party workers had put in significant effort in both constituencies.
Despite the Chief Minister and several cabinet members campaigning in Bagalkote for 15 days, the party was confident of a win, but it did not pan out as planned or expected, he added.
Among those present at the press meet were Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka, Legislative Council Opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, former Deputy Chief Minister and MLA Dr. C. N. Ashwath Narayan, MLC C. T. Ravi, Pratap Simha Nayak, and MLA Harish Poonja.
