Norfolk (UK): An 83-year-old retired woman from Attleborough, Norfolk, passed away from septic shock after her leg wound became infected, reportedly following a dog’s lick on July 7. The incident occurred on June 29 when June Baxter injured her leg while using a commode at home and was alone at the time. After her granddaughter arrived, the her dog licked the open wound.

After the medical tests, doctors found a bacteria commonly found in the mouths of dogs known as Pasteurella Multocida. This bacterium is harmless to animals but can pose serious risks to individuals with weakened immune systems. Baxter was also suffering from kidney, liver and cardiac problems. She began showing signs of sepsis the next day.

During the inquest, the Norfolk coroner’s court confirmed sepsis as the cause of death. Experts have advised pet owners that while dog licking is harmless for healthy individuals, open wounds should be properly covered and areas such as the eyes, nose and mouth should be avoided.

Earlier, in a case cited by The Times, an 85-year-old woman also died of sepsis caused by the same bacterium. A 2023 case report in BMC Geriatrics stressed the importance of raising awareness, especially among elderly pet owners.

Udupi: A delegation of the High Court Bench Struggle Committee met and submitted a petition to the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru at the Circuit House urging the opening of a High Court Bench in the coastal belt as well as a Mobile High Court Bench in Mangaluru.

MLC and convener of the Committee Ivan D’Souza, who spoke to the Chief Justice on the occasion, explained that the people of the coastal belt find it difficult to travel to Bengaluru to fight a petition in the High Court. The problem only aggravated during monsoon. D’Souza added that there was a delay in clearing the cases of Udupi, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts, which was causing further inconvenience to the people.

The MLC, who pointed out that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had also shown his preference for establishing a High Court Bench in the coastal region, requested for an approval to establish a Mobile High Court Bench first.
