Cumbria: Rebecca Hind, a 39-year-old woman from northwest England, has undergone one of the most extreme surgical interventions ever reported. After being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), thirteen of her internal organs ere removed.
Affecting just one in a million people, this disease initially showed symptoms of food poisoning, in Hind, after a Christmas party in late 2018. But persistent illness led to a diagnosis that changed her life. By the time doctors identified PMP, it had already spread extensively through her abdominal cavity.
In a series of life-saving but radical operations, Hind underwent the removal of her appendix, spleen, gallbladder, womb, ovaries, bowel, rectum, cervix, fallopian tubes, parts of her stomach and liver, and both sides of her diaphragm. She also endured eight rounds of chemotherapy. Now living with a stoma and dependent on electrolyte fluids and daily medication, Hind has no remaining treatment options.
“My daily life is a rollercoaster. But with the right attitude, you can still achieve a lot,” she told British media. She has gone surfing, dog sledging, and hot-air ballooning, refusing to be confined by her condition.
As part of her advocacy, Hind will participate in the 90-kilometre 'Tour de 4' cycling event later this year, led by Olympian Sir Chris Hoy. She has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to support other cancer survivors and raise money for Pseudomyxoma Survivor, a patient-led charity. Her campaign has already raised $1,800.
