New York: An official associated with the United Nations has resigned from his roles, claiming that the organisation may be preparing for a scenario involving the possible use of nuclear weapons in Iran.

Mohamad Safa announced his resignation in a post on X, sharing a letter explaining the reasons behind his decision. Safa served as the main representative of Patriotic Vision, also known as PVA, at the United Nations. The organisation holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

According to the UN Environment Programme’s Champions of the Earth, Safa had been serving as the executive director of the Patriotic Vision Organisation since 2013. In 2016, he was nominated by PVA as its permanent representative to the United Nations.

In his post and letter, Safa said he took the decision after much reflection and alleged that some senior figures at the United Nations were acting in the interest of a powerful lobby.

“I don't think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran,” he wrote, sharing an image of Tehran.

“This is a picture of Tehran. For you uneducated, untraveled, never-served, warhawks licking your chops at the thought of bombing it. It's not some low population desert. There are families, children, family pets. Regular working class people with dreams. You're sick to want war,” he added.

Safa pointed out that Tehran has a population of nearly 10 million people and urged readers to imagine the consequences of a nuclear strike on major cities such as Washington, Berlin, Paris or London.

“I gave up my diplomatic career to leak this information. I suspended my duties so as not to be part of or a witness to this crime against humanity, in an attempt to prevent a nuclear winter before it is too late,” he wrote.

He also referred to protests in the United States held under the slogan “No Kings”, saying the possibility of nuclear weapon use must be taken seriously due to its potential consequences.

“Act now. Spread this message worldwide. Take the streets. Protest for our humanity and future. Only the people can stop it. History will remember us,” he said.

Safa stated that he had considered resigning as early as 2023 and had waited for three years before taking the step. He also referred to multiple global conflicts and alleged that some UN officials were unwilling to accuse Israel and the United States of violating international law.

He further claimed that he faced criticism after expressing his views following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which led to an ongoing war.

“After that date, and after that same lobby imposed a new world order, which all started in Gaza, and as I expressed my concerns and offered a differing perspective, I found myself facing a range of criticisms and allegations,” he said.

Safa also alleged that he had been abandoned by the United Nations, faced censorship from certain senior officials, and received death threats directed at him and his family.

The United Nations has not issued any official response to his claims so far.
