Washington: The US military is preparing to send at least 1,000 troops of the 82nd Airborne Division to West Asia in the coming days, according to three people who are a part of the planning team.
The Airborne Division has been considered the US Army’s emergency response force and typically deployed at short notice. People who spoke on condition of anonymity said on Tuesday that a battalion of the 1st Brigade Combat Team as well as Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier, the division’s commander, and division staff, would be parts of the troops sent to West Asia, according to an AP report.
While US officials said recently that several US Navy ships carrying thousands of Marines would be leaving for the war with Iran, the Airborne Division troops would be the latest addition of US troops that would be sent to Iran.
A classified briefing from the Pentagon officials is scheduled to be presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Wednesday. A US officer, who also spoke under condition of anonymity, has said that a discussion on the potential deployment is expected to be discussed at the Capitol Hill.
