Rome, Feb 22 (AP): Pope Francis was in critical condition Saturday after he suffered a long asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high flows of oxygen, the Vatican said.
Francis, who has been hospitalised for a week with a complex lung infection, also received blood transfusions after tests showed a condition associated with anemia, the Vatican said in a late update.
“The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” the statement said.

Udupi (Karnataka) (PTI): An LPG tanker overturned on the national highway near Katapady in this district on Monday, triggering panic among motorists and residents in the area.
According to officials, the tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas was heading from Mangaluru towards Udupi when the driver allegedly lost control near a diversion along the highway, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker fell on its side on the roadside, prompting fears of a gas leak and a possible explosion. Fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot and began precautionary measures to prevent any mishap.
Officials said teams sprayed water on the tanker and checked for any leakage from the container as part of safety protocols. Traffic on the busy highway was disrupted for some time and vehicles were diverted until the situation was brought under control.
Authorities said no casualties were reported in the incident. Arrangements were being made to safely transfer the gas from the overturned tanker to another vehicle before removing it from NH-66.
Police have launched an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
