Modi pays tributes to Karunanidhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to the late DMK President M. Karunanidhi after laying a wreath on the body that was lying in state at Rajaji Hall here.

Arriving here by a special flight, Modi reached the government estate and paid his respects to the late former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.


Reservation must be made mandatory in private sector too

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has finally conceded the fact that youths in this country do not have jobs. Responding to the demand of reservation for Maratha community members, Gadkari said: “when there are hardly any jobs in the country, how do we offer reservation?” The question of the appropriateness of reservation to Maratha community is a point apart. But how can the logic of ‘no jobs’ hold water against having to create reservation for the people of a community? How does the government throw up the towel after having assured the youths of this country that they’d create immense job opportunities for them? Isn’t this admission of failure? Modi opened doors for liberalization of FDI immediately after he assumed power. He kept hoodwinking poor people in the name of Make in India etc.



Former minister Thippeswamy dies

Former minister, Challakere’s former legislator Thippeswamy passed away this morning. He was 76 years old. Thippeswamy breathed his last at Columbia Asia Hospital in Bengaluru where he was admitted following a severe illness.

Thippeswamy was Excise and Irrigation Minister in the governments led by HD Devegowda and JH Patil respectively. He was elected as MLA from Challakere Assembly constituency in 1985 for the first time.

Madras high court allows Karunanidhi's body to be buried at Marina Beach

The Madras high court on Wednesday allowed DMK leader M Karunanidhi to be buried at Chennai’s Marina beach.

“All we need is 6X6 foot land for a tall leader, nothing else,” said DMK in Madras high court while concluding its arguments for burying DMK leader M Karunanidhi at Chennai’s Marina Beach, the resting place of many Dravidian political icons.

The Madras High Court is hearing the arguments of the DMK and the Tamil Nadu government in the case filed by the opposition party against the government's decision not to allot land at Marina Beach to bury late DMK President M. Karunanidhi.

The DMK wants him interred near the seafront memorial of DMK founder and Karunanidhi's mentor C.N. Annadurai.

Youth killed in Delhi, 3 held

A youth has been killed while two passersby suffered injuries when a fight broke out on Delhi streets, police said on Wednesday, adding three persons have been arrested.

The incident occurred in south Delhi area late on Tuesday when a group of youngsters clashed apparently over personal enmity, a police officer said.

Chief Minister for five times and leader of DMK party for 50 years, the 94-year-old Karunanidhi breathed his last here owing to age related ailments in a private hospital here.

Two schools burnt down in Balochistan

Two girls schools have been set ablaze in Pakistan's Balochistan province, police said on Wednesday. No casualty was reported.

The schools located in Pishin district were set on fire late on Tuesday when the institutes were closed as they were both day schools.

Nation pays homage to Karunanidhi amid legal battle

Tens of thousands of emotionally charged people from all over Tamil Nadu on Wednesday paid homage to DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi even as his party battled legally with the state government for a burial place at the Marina Beach here.

Led by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, DMK members, leaders and people from all walks of life -- VIPs and others --file past the mortal remains of Karunanidhi at the Rajaji Hall in the heart of Chennai.

Madras High Court to decide on burial site for Karunanidhi's body

The Madras High Court on Wednesday morning would decide on the DMK's plea against Tamil Nadu's government's decision to deny burial of the party President M. Karunanidhi's body at Marina Beach.

Hearing the plea late Tuesday night, the court directed the state government and the Chennai Corporation to file their replies and adjourned the case to Wednesday morning 8 a.m.
