New Delhi: Abdul Fattah Mahdi, the brother of Talal, the Yemeni national allegedly murdered by Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, has strongly refuted media reports claiming that Talal destroyed Priya’s passport. Terming the claim as “baseless slander,” he wrote on social media that Indian media is attempting to distort facts and portray a convicted criminal as a victim.

Mahdi expressed regret over what he called the fabrication of facts, accusing Indian media outlets of trying to justify a criminal act and manipulate public sentiment. “They know that if the truth is told plainly, no one will feel sympathy,” he said.

He further stated that Nimisha Priya and her legal team failed to present the said passport during trial sessions arranged by the Indian Embassy. “Neither Nimisha nor her lawyers produced any such evidence during the judicial proceedings,” Mahdi asserted.

Commenting on reconciliation efforts, Mahdi made it clear that the victim’s family is not willing to accept any compromise. “This was not only a brutal crime but also a prolonged legal ordeal that deeply affected our family. We insist that the law of God be upheld,” he said.

The statement comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure clemency for Nimisha Priya, who faces capital punishment in Yemen. The allegations regarding the passport had surfaced in some Indian media reports as part of her defense narrative.

Shillong (PTI): An interstate racket involved in ATM thefts across several states has been busted, with the arrest of six persons in connection with a break-in at an electronic banking outlet in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused were allegedly involved in breaking into an ATM of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank on April 5, 2024, they said.

Three of the accused were arrested from Barpeta in Assam, while the remaining were apprehended from Haryana, police said.

Ri-Bhoi SP Giri Prasad M said a special police team was constituted to investigate the case.

"With coordinated efforts and assistance from Assam and Haryana Police, we were able to apprehend the accused involved in the ATM break-in," he told PTI.

The case was registered at Umiam police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the gang used gas cutters to break open the ATM safe and fled with the cash within minutes.

"The group is part of a larger network involved in similar ATM thefts across different states. Further investigation is underway to dismantle the entire network," the SP added.
