Mangaluru, November 21: Students led by Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a dharna in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here on Wednesday, urging the authorities to begin the academic activities for the second year para-medical students of the Wenlock Hospital besides appointing permanent lecturers.

Addressing the students, SFI district president Charan Shetty said that the hospital authorities should immediately start the classes to the students and the deputy commissioner should intervene to appoint lecturers.

The hospital authorities should stop using the students like labourers and provide basic facilities at the college. Instead of using the doctors to teach, the authorities should appoint permanent lecturers, he demanded.

District secretary Madhuri Bolara said that in the name of coaching and practical, the students were being forced to work in the hospital and even they were being threatened of giving TC if they protested. So, the district administration should intervene and solve the problem and ensure justice to the students, she demanded.

CPM leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said that it was shame on part of the Dakshina Kannada district, which was identified itself as an education hub, for ill-treating the students of the para-medical college. Like contract labourers, the students were being used for hospital works. Classes were not being conducted. It was not fair to torture the students who have lot of dreams for their future, he said.

SFI leaders Mayuri, Vikas Kuttar and para-medical students participated in the protest.

Jaipur (PTI): Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday expressed concern over the reported attacks and disruptions in prayer gatherings of the Christian community in different parts of the country, saying such incidents were "worrying and condemnable".

In a post on X, Gehlot said that while the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting a church and giving a message of peace and harmony, news of attacks on members of the Christian community from various regions reflected a serious contradiction.

"Symbolic gestures would not be enough, and strict legal action was required against those spreading hatred," the senior Congress leader said.

He added that Indian culture has always upheld the spirit of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", where every citizen has full freedom to practise their faith.

Gehlot urged the Centre and state governments to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no citizen is forced to celebrate their festival under fear.
