As part of its ongoing drive to combat the drug menace, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested a person involved in the sale of banned MDMA drug to residents and students in the city.

The Bengaluru CCB Division police on Tuesday detained two persons, including Chaitra Kundapura, Hindu activist known for her provocative speeches, in Udupi, on charges of duping a businessman from Byndoor and a BJP leader of crores of rupees after promising to get them BJP tickets in the last Karnataka Assembly elections.

K S Sheikh Karnire, hailing from the remote village of Karnire in Dakshina Kannada district, has achieved the remarkable feat of being honored with the prestigious Best Businessman award in Bahrain. 

A case of fraud has been registered at the Udupi CEN Police Station related to the unauthorized transfer of money from an individual's bank account using Google Pay's QR code feature.

On Saturday, at the University College campus in Mangaluru, Dr. Shamsul Islam, a retired Associate Professor of Political Science from the University of Delhi, unveiled posters containing the names of four significant incidents in the state and the names of 132 martyrs from Karnataka who participated in the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. This event was organized as part of the 'BV Kakkilaya Inspired Oration for 2023' on the topic of "Joint Martyrdoms, Joint Heritage of 1857 War of Independence" by the BV Kakkilaya Foundation.

Mangaluru: Many parts of India, including parts of Kananda-speaking states, witnessed revolts against the British Raj following the mutiny of 1857. The following 132 names of the martyrs of the 1857 War of Independence are from Karnataka (hundreds of martyrs remain unaccounted for). These included Hindus-Muslims-Sikhs as well as people of all Castes and sections, women included. These names have been gathered from Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle 1857-1947, v. 5, Ministry of Culture, Government of India & ICHR, 2018. It is based on contemporary British official documents including ‘Mutiny Records’. This list has been compiled by Dr. Shamsul Islam, former Associate Professor of Delhi University, and published as a Poster during the BV Kakkilaya Oration 2023, held at University College, Mangalore on September 9, 2023.
