The Kasargod court has awarded a two week’s judicial custody to the two accused in the murder case of Uppala Somkal’s CPM activist Abubakar Siddique on Wednesday.

Ashwit alias Acchu (28), and Kartik (27), both residents of Somkal Pratap and Aila Aaidan respectively, are the arrested accused. Two others involved in the case are absconding, and the search is on for them.

In a bid to allow smooth flow of the vehicular traffic, a tree that was located at Chilimbi curve near Lady Hill has been translocated on Tuesday morning.

The MMC had decided to cut the Tamarind tree located at Chilimbi near Lady Hill as it was allegedly posing a hurdle for traffic.  But the activists of pro-environmental organization NECF had vehemently opposed the decision.

The protest called by Motor Transport Organisations demanding the withdrawal of the Central Government’s Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill has evoked good response and created a bandh-like situation in Kasargod.

The services of KSRTC and private buses have been suspended. Only a handful of private vehicles are on the road. Lorries, auto rickshaws, and taxies have stayed off the road to support the strike. Shops are closed in the wake of the protest. Most of the educational institutions have declared a holiday.

A gas tanker toppled when its driver lost control over the vehicle near Hanuman Temple in Kumble on the national highway this morning.

A youth was electrocuted when he came in contact with high tension wire while removing the metal sheets from the Darga College building during its repair on Monday.

The Manjeshwar police have detained two persons in connection with the murder case of CPM activist Abubakar Siddique of Somkal in Uppala.

Two passengers were killed on the spot in the crash between a car and a bus at around 9:30 pm near Kokkada village within the limits of the Uppinangady police station.

The deceased have been identified as Dinesh P (32), son of Veerappa Malekudi, a resident of Dharmasthala; and Sandesh (30), a resident of Dharmasthala.
