Bengaluru, August 31: Scholar Dr G Ramakrishna said that the central government has arrested the human rights activists in order to divert the attention of the people on the criminal activities of Sanatan Sanstha in the country.

Addressing the agitators who staged an agitation against the arrest of human rights activists, here on Friday, he said that the police department has been disclosing the hands of Sanatan Samsta in the murders of Dabholkar, Pansare, MM Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh. In order to divert the public attention from such issue, the centre has arrested the human rights activists, he alleged.

Much against to the public opinion, the Central government has introduced demonetisation, GST, hiking petroleum products and this has caused widespread resentment among people. At this time, the BJP was finding it difficult to face the Lok Sabha election in 2019. In order to avoid the public debates on central government’s failed programmes, the government has been targeting the human rights activists and falsely fixed them, he alleged.

Senior journalist Indudhara Honnapura said that by arresting the human rights activists, the central government has been trying to kill the values of democracy. If the BJP really has concern towards the Constitution and the Indian tradition, it should not have arrested the human rights activists who have been advocating the freedom of expression, he said.

Congress leader Prof Radhakrishna, senior advocate AK Subbaiah, senior journalists Dinesh Amin Mattu, Vijayamma, KS Vimala of Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane, Dr N Gayathri, CPM leader K Prakash, human rights activist Shivasundar, advocate Ananth Nayak and others were present.

Budapest/Washington: US Vice President J D Vance has said that Lebanon was never included in the ceasefire understanding with Iran, describing the confusion as a “legitimate misunderstanding”.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Hungary, Vance said, “I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon and it just didn’t. We never made that promise.”

He stressed that the United States had not included Lebanon in the scope of the ceasefire at any stage.

His remarks come amid continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, where more than 200 people were reported killed, even as ceasefire talks between Iran and the US move forward.

Vance said Israel had “offered … to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful”.

He warned that if Iran allows the situation in Lebanon to affect the negotiations, it could derail the talks.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that’s ultimately their choice,” he said.
