Mysuru, July 31: Progressive thinker Prof Mahesh Chandra Guru said that instead of becoming the chowkidar of farmers, labourers, dalits, tribals, minorities, backward classes and neglected communities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the chowkidar of Hindutva, fundamentalists, market and exploiting forces which is the biggest betrayal to the nation.
Addressing the agitators who staged a protest against the statement of BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on intellectuals who oppose Hindutva and central government, in front of the town hall here on Tuesday, he said that both speech and action of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have no relationship. In recent days, he has used two words -‘Bhagidar’ and ‘Chowkidar’- repeatedly and was misleading the people. He has not actively participated in the process of the welfare of exploited classes. Instead of this, he had become a part of industrialists, businessmen and upper castes and it was against the Constitution and the democracy, he alleged.
In 2014, Modi had come to power promising to make mature India and India for all. But everything is not fine in the NDA government. Dalits, tribals, minorities, backward classes, women and youth were deprived of their fundamental rights and facing problems, for which fundamentalists, who have been controlling the central government were responsible, he alleged.
In reality, progressive thinkers and activists were the real custodians and protectors of the constitution, democracy, civil society and human values. Because of such people, democracy was alive in the country, he claimed.
NDA government sponsored Hindutva and fundamentalists have thought that killing progressive people life Prof Bhagavan, Nidumamidi Swamiji, Nijagunananda Swamiji, Girish Karnad, Narendra Nayak, Prakash Raj, Mahesh Chandra Guru, Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Hulikal Nataraj and others was their real Dharma or religion and it was a great threat to the democracy. Recently, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal had said that if he was the home minister, he would have killed progressive thinkers and those who oppose the constitution by shooting them. But even after listening to his statements, Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister have maintained silence. People have been watching this adamant attitude of the BJP leader and the inaction of the custodians of the democracy in taking legal action against him, he said.
Basavaraj from CPIM, Dr N Lakshminarayan from PUCL, progressive thinker Dr Rathi Rao, Muddukrishna of CPI, Varadaiah, Shambhaiah, Choranahalli Shivanna, Edadore Mahadevaiah, Devendra, Mahesh, Javarappa of DSS, Raita Sangha leaders and others were present.

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has acquitted a man and his parents in a dowry death case, saying the prosecution failed to establish allegations of cruelty or dowry harassment against them.
Additional Sessions Judge Deepak Wason acquitted Kartik Sharma, his father Ravi Dutt Sharma, and his mother Veena Sharma in the case of Shivali Sharma, who died by suicide in March 2023.
The accused were facing trial under Sections 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives) and 304B (dowry death) of the IPC.
In the April 1 order, the court said, “There is nothing on record to establish the culpability of the accused persons in the commission of the offences charged against them. The prosecution has failed to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.”
It held that while the death was unnatural and occurred within seven years of marriage, the key elements of dowry death, particularly proof of harassment connected to dowry demands, remained unproven.
According to the prosecution, the deceased's family alleged she was subjected to harassment and repeated dowry demands, including cash and a vehicle, which allegedly drove her to commit suicide.
The police registered the FIR after her parents made statements before an executive magistrate.
However, during the trial, key prosecution witnesses, including the deceased's mother, father, brother, uncle and grandmother, did not support the allegations in the court.
They consistently stated that Shivali was living a "peaceful and happy" married life and denied any dowry demand or harassment by the accused.
The witnesses further attributed her death to depression caused by her child's serious medical condition.
The court noted that the testimonies of close relatives, considered the most material witnesses, revealed no evidence of cruelty or dowry-related harassment “soon before her death,” a crucial requirement to establish an offence under Section 304B IPC.
The court observed that the medical evidence confirmed death due to asphyxia caused by hanging.
Giving the benefit of the doubt, the court said this alone was insufficient to implicate the accused without corroborative evidence of cruelty.
