Jerusalem: Israel’s security cabinet has reportedly approved a plan by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the military occupation of Gaza City, located in the north of the Palestinian enclave.

“The [Israeli military] will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement early on Friday announcing the takeover plan.

"Any resolution by the security cabinet would now need to be approved by the full government cabinet," news agency Reuters quoted Israeli government sources as saying.

Axios news reporter Barak Ravid, citing an Israeli official, said on X that the operation will involve the forced displacement of “all Palestinian civilians from Gaza City to the central camps and other areas by October 7”.

In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Bill Hemmer on Thursday, Netanyahu said “we intend to” when asked whether Israel planned to take control of the entire coastal territory.

However, he said that Israel wanted to hand over the territory to Arab forces that would govern it, added Reuters. He did not elaborate on the governance arrangements or which Arab countries could be involved.

A major ground operation in Gaza City could displace many thousands and severely hinder efforts to deliver aid to the famine-stricken region, where nearly 200 people have reportedly died from starvation and malnutrition.
