Delhi (Jantar Mantar) : Members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, describing it as a direct attack on the Muslim community. The board expressed concerns that the proposed amendments would lead to the usurpation of Waqf properties.
Originally scheduled for March 13, the protest was postponed due to Holi. AIMPLB spokesperson Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, in a press conference, stated that the bill amounted to discrimination against the community. The demonstration followed the Union Cabinet’s approval of the amendments, which incorporate recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and are set to be tabled in the second half of the budget session of Parliament.
AIMPLB General Secretary Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi stated that the board had engaged with the government through democratic channels but had not been heard. He argued that the amendment would create unrest, particularly concerning mosques and cemeteries, and described it as detrimental to the country’s development.
BJP MP and JPC Chairman Jagadambika Pal criticized the protest, stating that AIMPLB had been given the opportunity to present its concerns before the committee. He asserted that the amendments aimed to improve the law and benefit marginalized sections, including women, widows, and children.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused AIMPLB of using the Waqf issue to incite communal tensions and alleged that political parties such as Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party, and AIMIM were supporting efforts to provoke Muslim citizens over the matter.
