New Delhi: In a session of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan criticized the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer "Animal," accusing it of promoting violence and misogyny.

Ranjan expressed concern about the impact of such films on society, particularly the youth, and questioned how the Censor Board cleared movies that she deemed a "disease to the society."

During the Zero Hour, Ranjan shared her daughter's experience, stating that her daughter and college friends walked out of the movie halfway, deeply affected by the violence and misogyny depicted in the film.

Ranjan highlighted the influence of movies on societal behavior and expressed worry about recent films like "Kabir," "Pushpa," and now "Animal," which she claimed showcase excessive violence and disrespect towards women.

The MP, representing Chhattisgarh, pointed out the depiction of violence against women in films like "Kabir" and "Animal," expressing concern about the normalization and justification of such behavior. She noted that the portrayal of historical figures, like Arjan Vaili in "Animal," inappropriately used for a film on gang war, contributes to a distorted representation.

Ranjan criticized the trend of students considering anti-heroes and negative characters as role models, leading to increased violence in society inspired by films. She questioned the role of the Censor Board in approving movies that she believes are detrimental to society.

She asked why was the Censor Board clearing such films, which are a "disease to the society and does no good for it".

Patna (PTI): Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on Tuesday exuded confidence that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC will again be voted to power in West Bengal.

Yadav returned to Patna after a four-day poll campaign in West Bengal.

“The atmosphere there is euphoric and people want to bring Didi (Mamata Banerjee) back to power. I am fully confident that the TMC will win the election,” he told reporters here.

He said that a large number of people from Bihar living in West Bengal share a lot of love and respect for Mamata Banerjee.

Responding to BJP’s allegations that the TMC had “ruined” West Bengal during its tenure, the RJD leader said the “entire country has been ruined under the Narendra Modi-led government”.

“I want to ask one question to Modi ji – you have been prime minister for more than 11 years, tell me one thing you have done for Bengal,” Yadav said.

The first phase of elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly was held on April 23, while the second phase will take place on April 29. Votes will be counted on May 4.
