Canada: Controversial columnist and author Tarek Fatah has passed away after battling cancer, as confirmed by his daughter Natasha Fatah on Monday. She paid tribute to her father in a tweet, describing him as the "Lion of Punjab" and a "voice of the down-trodden, underdogs, and the oppressed".

Taking to twitter, Tarek’s daughter Natasha wrote, "Lion of Punjab. Son of Hindustan. Lover of Canada. Speaker of truth. Fighter for justice. Voice of the down-trodden, underdogs, and the oppressed. @TarekFatah has passed the baton on… his revolution will continue with all who knew and loved him. Will you join us? 1949-2023."

Fatah was known for his advocacy of LGBT rights and his opposition to sharia law. He called himself an "Indian born in Pakistan" and a "Punjabi born into Islam". He was a vocal critic of the Pakistani religious and political establishment, and even criticized the partition of India. Fatah started his career in journalism as a reporter for the Karachi Sun in 1970 but was later charged with sedition and barred from journalism by the Zia-ul-Haq regime in 1977. He moved to Canada in 1987 after spending some time in Saudi Arabia. It should be noted that on April 21, false reports of Fatah's death had surfaced.
