Mangaluru, September 14: Airport Development Authority of India South Zone Regional Director S Srikumar said that Mangaluru International airport terminal extension work would be completed by March 2020.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said that total 10,000 sq ft terminal would be constructed at a cost of Rs 132.24 crore and separate entry and exit points would be made for international travelers. The existing hall could accommodate 250 passengers on arrival of the flights and the new one could accommodate 500 passengers. Currently, the airport has 28,000 sq ft terminal and with the extension, it would have 38,000 sq ft terminal which will suffice the demand, he said.

Extension of the Safety Basic Strip of the Runway and the second stage of the Taxi Track was taken up at a cost of Rs 121 crore and it would be completed by August 2019. The Safety Basic Strip extension work was taken up for the safety of international level flights maintenance. Currently, the existing runway has the capacity of maintaining 10 flights per hour and now with the extension, it will increase it to 20 flights, he said.

Flights parking bay extension work was taken at a cost of Rs 7 crore and it would be completed by 2019, he added.

Various schemes under CSR

Under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Mangaluru airport has made an agreement to construct permanent UGD work at Malavoor at an estimated cost of Rs 6.75 crore. Apart from this, an anganwadi building was constructed at Malavoor at a cost of Rs 14 lakh, he said.

The Mangaluru Airport has got the first place in India under the Swachh Bharat scheme and second place in rating. It was their target to take this airport to number one in the country in the ratings. In the international level, the Mangaluru Airport has 30th place and the authority has planned to bring this within Top 10 airports in the world, Srikumar said.

In view of this, the toilets in the terminal building would be renovated into international standard. Security hold area extension, artificial fall-ceiling and other works would be taken up at a cost of Rs 7.50 crore and the work would be completed within next 8 months, he said.

Local art and culture would be given importance in the airport. Pillars of Guttu models, Tiger dance, Yakshagana Art forms and other Art forms would be developed in the Airport, he said.

Pune (PTI): Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) president Prakash Ambedkar was admitted to a hospital in Pune on Thursday after he complained of chest pain, his party said, requesting that the privacy of the Dalit leader's family be respected.

“Balasaheb (Prakash) Ambedkar was admitted to a hospital in Pune in the early hours of Thursday, October 31, for chest pain. He is being treated in the ICU for a blood clot in his heart. His condition is stable and he will undergo angiography in the next hour,” said VBA on X.

The party said Ambedkar is expected to be under observation for the next 3-5 days.

“VBA state president Rekha Tai Thakur, with the support of the party’s election coordination committee, manifesto committee and media and research department, will be leading the (assembly election) campaign of VBA for the next few days,” the post said.

The family of 70-year-old Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, won’t take questions at this time, the party said, requesting that their privacy be respected as they deal with the circumstances concerning his health, the post added.
