Mangaluru: The 320 km coastline of Karnataka is all set to get a security boost with establishment of two more coastal radar stations, one each at Kundapur of Udupi district and Belekeri in Uttara Kannada district.
The new radar stations will boost the coastal security which is now being guarded by two existing radar stations at Bhatkal light house and Suratkal which are compatible of covering 60-80 nautical miles.
DIG S S Dasila, Commander Coast Guard (Karnataka) announced on Thursday that the two new radar stations will mean that the coast guard will be better equipped to provide protection to the fishermen, catch hold of smuggling and piracy operations among others.
Dasila was speaking at the Coast Guard headquarters at Panambur on the eve of 43rd Coast Guard Raising Day.
Dasila further added that the radar station at Suratkal can zoom the images till Bhatkal, he said while recalling that the cameras with range of 15-20 nautical miles capture excellent images.
Speaking of data, Dasila added that the coast guard saved 202 lives in 2017, 209 in 2018 and 19 in 2019 till January 30.
“We are prepared for any sort of operation. State-of-the-art ships and aircraft manned by officers take pride in protecting India’s maritime domain,” he stressed.

Bagalkote (Karnataka) (PTI): Three people were killed and one person seriously injured in a head-on collision between two trucks in this district, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Mallikarjun (22), Revanasiddappa (20), and Suresh (33), while the injured has been named Ramesh (22), police said.
The accident occurred on the night of Tuesday and Wednesday near Bantanur Cross in Mudhol taluk, when a bulk carrier transporting cement collided with another truck, causing one of the vehicles to be crushed under the impact.

The collision forced the bulk carrier to topple and become mangled, police said.
Two of the truck’s occupants—the driver and his helper—died on the spot, along with the driver of the cement-laden bulk carrier, Bagalkote Superintendent of Police Siddharth Goyal said.
Police, with the help of a JCB, removed the damaged vehicle to rescue the trapped occupants.
The lone survivor, who sustained grievous injuries, was shifted to a hospital for treatment and is under observation, police added, noting that further investigation is underway.
