Bengaluru: Byatarayanapura Police have arrested three absconding men including a home guard personnel, who had posed as cops and looted a senior citizen by threatening him earlier this week.

The police have held Manjunath of Bapuji Nagar, Arun Kumar of Kalidas Circle, and Nagaraja (31) of Kasturba Colony in Girinagar. While Manjunath is a home guard, his two acquaintances are auto-rickshaw drivers, a senior police officer has said.

The police have also confiscated Rs. 6 lakhs in cash, one gold nugget weighing 167 grams, an auto rickshaw, and a car from the accused.

On February 7, Sundaram, a senior citizen, who was traveling to Coimbatore, was walking towards Satellite Bus Stand on Mysore Road when he was approached by two men dressed in black jackets. They introduced themselves as cops and asked Sundaram to open the bag for checking.

The duo was joined by the third man, who arrived in a car, and all three of them looted Sundaram of Rs. 6 lahks in cash as well as gold biscuits worth Rs. 3 lahks.

The Byatarayanapura Police officers, who registered a case and investigated the matter, arrested the three accused.

Similar incidents of miscreants, home guards, and police constables posing as higher police officials and harassing and extorting money from commoners are on the rise. Earlier, a home guard attached to the BBMP was arrested for harassing a young couple for sitting near a lake “without permission”.

In another incident, two police constables harassed a married couple for walking on the streets at night. The two constables were dismissed from the service after inquiry by Bengaluru Police.

Vijayapura: Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal has denied making any derogatory statement about Prophet Muhammad, clarifying that there was a misstatement during his speech at a Ram Navami event in Hubballi. "I did not speak about Prophet Muhammad. I meant to refer to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, but there was a mistake in the speed of speech," he said addressing reporters on Monday.

He alleged that members of the Congress, frustrated by their hooliganism and failure to collect their hafta (extortion) in Vijayapura are using the Prophet as an excuse to speak against me. “There is no culture of denigrating another religion in Hinduism. Our gurus and elders have not taught us that,” he said.

Responding to another controversy involving an audio clip in which he was allegedly threatened, Yatnal said the police are investigating the matter and that those behind it will soon be exposed. “No one can finish me. The Hindus of Karnataka are with me. If someone tries to finish me, the whole state will rise in protest,” he warned.
