Nitish says 'no' to minister's exit over Muzaffarpur horror

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said there was no need for Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma to resign over the Muzaffarpur shelter home horror.

Despite repeated demands for her resignation by the opposition and even by two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, Nitish Kumar gave a clean chit to Manju Verma.


High Court grants bail to Andhra Bank ex-official

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted bail to a former director of the Andhra Bank arrested in a Rs 5,000 crore fraud case involving Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech.

Justice Mukta Gupta allowed bail plea of Anup Prakash Garg asking him to furnish a personal bond of Rs two lakh with two surety bonds of the like amount.

UP shelter home abuse case: 24 girls rescued

Police on Monday rescued 24 girls from a shelter home in a town in eastern Uttar Pradesh after allegations of their sexual exploitation came to light, news agency PTI reported. A couple who were managers at the shelter home and its superintendent have been arrested.

116 Assam villages flooded after excess water released from dam

Thousands of people in 116 villages of Assam's Golaghat district have been affected by flooding after excess water was released from a dam located at Nagaland's Wokha district, officials said.

The dam is run by the North East Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

Fourteen Maoist guerrillas were killed in a gun battle with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said on Monday.

The gun battle occurred when a joint team of Special Task Force of Chhattisgarh Police and the District Reserve Guard headed to Miltkatong area during August 5 night following information about the presence of the Maoists, a police officer told IANS.

DGCA suspends 2 Jet pilots for Riyadh incident

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has suspended two pilots of a Jet Airways flight which overshot the runway at Riyadh prior to take off on August 3, an official said on Monday.

"The DGCA has suspended the licence of both the pilots involved in the runway excursion incident at Riyadh, pending investigations," said a top DGCA official on Monday.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the challenge to Article 35A in the absence of a judge of a three-judge bench that was hearing the case and directed the next hearing on August 27.

It also said that on its next hearing it will decide whether the matter should be referred to a five-judge Constitution Bench.

Militant arrested with grenades in Jammu

 A militant was arrested here with eight hand grenades intended to be used during Independence Day here and in the national capital, police said on Monday.

Irfan Hassan Wani, a militant from south Kashmir's Pulwama district, was arrested on Sunday near Convent Crossing in the city's Gandhi Nagar area.
