The ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ of Kodagu

Central defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman was in Kodagu recently to survey the damage caused by recent torrential rains and floods. A group of environmentalists met her when she came to attend the meeting in Deputy Commissioner’s office. The most important aspect is that there were a few retired army men in the team that awaited her audience. Instead of coming straight to this meeting, she engaged in a conversations with environmentalists. They wanted to brief her about the destruction caused on ecology, mining and damage-causing activities that were happening in Kodagu in the name of development contributing to the present state of challenge that the tiny region found itself in.

From Modi magic to urn politics

There is no second thought on the fact that Atal Bihari Vajpayee is single handedly responsible for the respectable position the otherwise ‘untouchable’ BJP acquired in the past to form NDA. We don’t know yet of how long Modi’s fallacy and loud politics would continue. But Vajpayee provided a solid foundation for BJP is a reality beyond any doubt. Vajpayee has a long standing political journey that begins from pre-independence days. He built BJP based on liberal values of Hindutva.

UAE’s hearty gesture; pinchpenny behavior by centre

Any country cannot progress without the strong friendship and good relations with other nations. India has to always bear in mind the gesture of other countries that stretched a hand of friendship and strength when the nation was freed from British rule. If they hadn’t helped India, the country wouldn’t see such good growth today. Similarly, India has also helped other nations during times of their distress. Such exchanges of help and support are not a sign of weakness or inferiority. If the laws of the land do not permit us to accept the form of help, as a nation we need to express gratitude for the gesture by our friend-nation. It is our duty.

Exploitation, illegalities breed in ashrams

The word 'Ashram' has a very deep meaning in Indian languages since the word indicates the philosophical and spiritual bond that one shares with the space. The place where saints and monks live, is called Ashram. But in today’s India, schools and colleges host varied types of ashrams. The ones that have mushroomed in the country host a variety of people too like orphans, aged ones, poor people, dalits etc. The most disheartening part is that, they have long ago lost their significance to their name and the works they engage in. They are just places that are set up to save taxes and may be even hoodwink people.

Ganga chocking; they’re looking for Saraswati

Thinker, rationalist Amit Madhesiya has made a documentary ‘Searching for Saraswati’. His documentary is based on the references that this river existed during Purana or Rig Veda times. This documentary throws light on several aspects of the river that disappeared and the government’s decision to look for its traces.

Floods being declared ‘national disaster’ would solve problem?

Kerala has been witness to the most devastating floods of the century. The last two weeks have been massive testing times for the ‘god’s own country’ with more than 300 declared dead and lakhs of people being displaced owing to torrential rains and gushing waters. PM Modi visited Kerala on Sunday for an aerial survey of the affected places and declared Rs 500 crore as interim relief. The ruling party, the opposition and the government of Kerala have together requested this to be declared a national disaster. There has been widespread support to this in social media too.

Floods kindled sense of humanity

Rains seem have weakened in Kodagu and Kerala, but the ill effects of this torrential showers that wreaked havoc on these parts is beginning to show up now. The hinterlands were out of reach till now. But since the water level is receding, the areas that were out of bounds till now, can be connected and reached. The actual picture of damage is beginning to become clear in phases now.

Kodagu is drowning; humanity should be saving grace

Kodagu is always in news for two main reasons. One, for its demand of wanting to be a separate state.  The other reasons is its flood situation. Assumedly, there is a strong enough reason for demanding the region to go separate as a state, owing to the fact that our politicians and governments have ignored the region. There is a lot of truth to this. But some vested interests have been stumbling blocks in the road to Kodagu’s development. There is a close link to Kodagu’s development and its flood situation. The flood waters that fill Kodagu to the brim, have been pushing the district into distress time and again.

Era of liberal Hindutva politics ends

As if to indicate the path of extremism the current Hindutva politics is taking, from that of liberal nationalism, veteran politician and statesman, RSS ideologue former PM Atal Bihari Vajapayee breathed his last on Thursday. It had been more than a decade since Vajpayee moved away from active politics and public life. As a mark of liberal politics he stood for, Vajpayee spent almost his last few years in the ICU. But the most troubling fact is, all the contemporaries that had joined hands with him during his heydays, weren’t facing any better time in the party either.

Mahadayi interlocutory order is inappropriate distribution of water

In the struggle for water that lasted for nearly 20 years affecting North Karnataka region such as Dharwad, Vijayapura and others there has been a respite to the problem, finally. The Mahadayi Tribual has given its interlocutory order in case of Mahadayi water sharing issue between Karnataka and Goa.  The tribunal has admitted that Karnataka has a right on the water of this river that originates in the border area of Karnataka and flows into Goa.
