By elections in Karnataka: Who’s responsible?

Election commission has declared elections in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, along with three Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka. Mandya, Ballari and Shivamogga districts will have to face an unexpected election before they go to polls again in the next five months owing to this decision. The elected representative will last for a term of only a few months before the new one is chosen. Isn’t this a little expensive to use resources just so that the whole process has to be repeated again? As per the EC, three Lok Sabha seats have been lying vacant since the last few months so conducting the election is inevitable. But the question that arises right now is the usefulness of a candidate who’d be elected for a matter of few months.

Is Mysuru Dasara a 'Naada Habba'?

South India has been opposing the imposition of cultural and political imageries by north India in various ways. Two years ago, the central government had to face people’s wrath for making ‘Onam’ of Kerala into ‘Vamana Jayanthi’. Dravida thoughts are resurfacing in Tamil Nadu. ‘Mahisha Dasara’ was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in Karnataka as against the usually accepted format of Dasara. Mahisha Dasara made an excellent effort to put forth the true narrative of the Dasara, with people from Dalit, shudra and minority communities along with rational thinkers and intellectuals joining the celebrations.

India answers America's arrogance

All countries form foreign policies according to their interests and convenience. Independent India under the leadership of Nehru credit this path with great care. India emerged as the leader of the third world countries when the cold war between America and Russia was at its peak. India took a soft stance on Russia when Pakistan hurriedly rest into the arms of America. Nehru understood that India had to side with Russia though America the strongest nation then could have been of great help with its capitalist power. It never declared his inclination towards Russia. He has maintained an arm's length distance from Russia. This continued till the Soviet Union collapsed.

Aadhaar will soon enter private sector too

The Supreme Court of India has given some outstanding judgments in the recent times with regard to Sabarimala and sexuality minority issues. But then the same court has left a lot of gaps in its judgment on Aadhaar petition. As soon as the Supreme Court says Aadhaar is not needed in some cases, people cannot assume they can do without Aadhaar forever. Those who wish to live without, must be prepared to face a fair amount of challenges in this country. Though SC has disallowed private companies from using Aadhar information or card, it is anybody's guess as to how successful this ruling would be. Will the private sector even be able to face the challenges in this context?

Once upon a time, a tiger caught a mouse in the forest. The mouse began to shudder wondering when the tiger would eat it up for a small snack, much to its surprise, the tiger wanted to be friends with the mouse. The mouse couldn’t believe its fate. The tiger held the tiny mouse on his paw, and began speaking to him like a close friend. The mouse had no reason to disbelieve. After a while, the mouse began to strut its tiny body around, with the pride of being friends with the strongest animal in the surroundings. It also felt everyone would respect and fear him because he was close to the strongest animal in the area.

Criminalisation of politics has to end

Politics has come a long way from the one that was practiced by Gandhi, Nehru and AKG. It has been at least three decades since money and muscle power has been dictating the terms of politics in the country. Our assemblies have become safe haven for criminals after globalisation, liberalization and privatization set in.

Gandhi ideology mocked in Modi's India

India is celebrating Gandhiji's 150th birth anniversary like some kind of a mockery. Modi has restricted Gandhi to just a symbol of cleaning roads. There is a reason to this. Gandhi is a memory, an indelible one, that seeps the sangh Parivar in guilt owing to the end he met at the hands of a person who believed in Sangh ideology. Hence the BJP which believes in Sangh ideology has restricted Gandhiji to a metaphor of sweeping roads. BJP leaders stand with rooms in the hands on the birth anniversary of Gandhiji clearly ignorant is all other messages and teachings. Gandhians fear whether the leaders have held broom to sweep away his other values such as non violence, coexistence, harmony and secularism.

Helping others isn’t an offense any more

More people die in road accidents than in wars. Highways are the death beds. And India is known for its killer roads. Tragedy is, one need not be in a vehicle or drive one to be an accident victim. As per the data available, on an average 56 pedestrians die every year on or by the roads. This number has increased manifold from 2014 to 2017, by a good 66 per cent. Number of vehicle commuters who died on the roads are even higher than this. More than a lakh and half people died on the roads in 2016 in about 5 lakh accidents.
