Mangaluru: Former DU Prof. Dr. Shamsul Islam unveils posters on 1857 War martyrs from Karnataka

On Saturday, at the University College campus in Mangaluru, Dr. Shamsul Islam, a retired Associate Professor of Political Science from the University of Delhi, unveiled posters containing the names of four significant incidents in the state and the names of 132 martyrs from Karnataka who participated in the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. This event was organized as part of the 'BV Kakkilaya Inspired Oration for 2023' on the topic of "Joint Martyrdoms, Joint Heritage of 1857 War of Independence" by the BV Kakkilaya Foundation.

List of 132 martyrs from Karnataka who laid down their lives during 1857 War of Independence

Mangaluru: Many parts of India, including parts of Kananda-speaking states, witnessed revolts against the British Raj following the mutiny of 1857. The following 132 names of the martyrs of the 1857 War of Independence are from Karnataka (hundreds of martyrs remain unaccounted for). These included Hindus-Muslims-Sikhs as well as people of all Castes and sections, women included. These names have been gathered from Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle 1857-1947, v. 5, Ministry of Culture, Government of India & ICHR, 2018. It is based on contemporary British official documents including ‘Mutiny Records’. This list has been compiled by Dr. Shamsul Islam, former Associate Professor of Delhi University, and published as a Poster during the BV Kakkilaya Oration 2023, held at University College, Mangalore on September 9, 2023.

Mangaluru: Governor Gehlot calls for opening of Physiotherapy centers at all PHCs in state 

Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot has called for the establishment of well-equipped special physiotherapy units in all primary health centers (PHCs) across the state. He emphasized the importance of physiotherapy as a significant form of medical treatment during his inaugural address at the two-day 'Mangalore Physiocon International Physiotherapy Conference' titled 'Connect to Unlock the Potential of Physiotherapy.' The event was organized by the South Canara Physiotherapy Teachers Association and held at the TMA Pai International Convention Centre in Mangaluru.
