Udupi: The workers of Congress and BJP exchanged heated words when the saffron party workers opposed the Congressmen’s demand to close the shops to support the bandh at Kadiyala this morning.

Mangaluru: The Congress party's bandh call against fuel prices has got a positive response in Mangaluru. While most of the stores are closed, private buses have stayed off the roads.

Stones pelted at two KSRTC buses in Bantwal and tyres burnt at several places following the Bharat Bandh. Meanwhile, the police arrested two persons who were allegedly trying to block the road.

The Bharat Bandh call given by Congress Party against the fuel price rise has evoked a good response in the district. Private and government buses have responded to the bandh by staying off the roads. While some private vehicles are plying on the road, some shops have kept their shutters open.

Former union minister and senior Congress leader Janardhan Poojary who is instrumental in renovating the Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple, said that as usual, the Mangaluru Dasara festival, being held from the Gokarnanatheshwara temple would start from Oct 10 and end on Oct 19.

“I will act in a Tulu movie. But everyone in Tulunadu should watch that movie and the revenue generated from that movie should be used for the education of the poor children”, said Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty.

Former union finance minister and senior Congress leader Janardhana Poojary said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take steps to slash fuel prices which were sky-rocketed due to illegal storage of petroleum products in the country.

Seeking support for the Bharat Bandh from the businessmen, industrialists, merchants and general public, the district Congress workers and leaders took out a Padayatre in the city on Sunday.
