Mangaluru: A two days International Conference on “Sustainable Urban Development, Resource Conservation and Food Security” ‘Surf- 19’  was  organized by BIT and BEADS at Bearys Knowledge campus, Innoli, Mangalore on 26th -27th April, 2019.

The inauguration ceremony was held at International seminar hall with invocation of Almighty. Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa Welcomed the gathering and also introduced the chief guest of day one Dr. Alok Kumar Srivatsav, Chief Scientist and Director, CFTRI Mysore, and the guest of honors DR. S A Khan, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, International Islamic University Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Bharat Mansata, writer and environmental activist, involved in ecological regeneration, Amarnadh Adusumali a farmer/entrepreneur who runs a organic farm near Madurai and Mrs. Deepa Vedavyas, Principal, Ecopod Architects, Syed Mohammed Beary, Hon. Chairman, Bearys Group & Bearys Academy of Learning . Mr. Mazahr S Beary, Trustee, Bearys Academy of Learning and Principals & HODs of various departments.

In his speech he said the SURF-19 was intended to provide the participating delegates an opportunity to listen to and interact with eminent subject experts from reputed institutes and industry across the globe.

Syed Mohammed Beary in his presidential address during the inaugural session added that the greed and pride of humans have led to the destruction of natural resources. “If this continues, the scenario will soon change and in next few years people of metro cities like Bengaluru and others will have to migrate during summer to other places” he said while adding that India was leader in sustainable developing till a century ago. “Some of the examples for this are Taj Mahal and the architecture of temples in Tamil Nadu. We are accountable for the protection of environmental resources”.

Dr. Alok Kumar Srivastava, in his speech said that with sustainable crops the soil fertility and nutrition in crops will increase. He also narrated that, India once use to import wheat and other products, whereas now it is the exporter of many commodities. He emphasized that still we need to work hard to achieve chemical free commodities.

Dr.SA Khan, in his speech said “man has to learn and implement many things from the nature” he said the birds fly in the air keeping the body shape as V and the  design of fighter planes follows exactly in V shape so as reduce the aero dynamical friction and drag is reduced by 30%. He also taken an example of   plumber who connect the horizontal pipe the water tank which reduces the direct pressure of water in one direction.

Akram Sayeed, an Entrepreneur and community leader, Dallas, USA.  In his speech said the globe is under three threats in the coming years 1. Loneliness, the urbanization which is the cause. 2. Extreme weather conditions causing Tsunamis, Glacier, fires in the woods. 3. Global economic vulneraries. He urged the researchers to work towards overcoming these world threats. Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi presented the Concluding remarks and thanked Chief Guest and Guests of honor.

At the same venue there was Panel Discussion on Food Security, Keynote Address and Presentation by Dr. Alok Kumar Srivastava, and Presentation by Bharat Mansata, followed by Presentation by Mr. Amarnadh Adusumali the event was moderated by Dr. Basavaraj M., Professor & Head, Mechanical Engineering, BIT, Mangalore. Around 60 papers were presented at different venues under four tracks along with poster presentation.

During the post lunch session a Panel Discussion on “Advances and Recent Trends in Engineering and Technology” was organised at the International Seminar Hall, moderated by Dr. Aziz Musthafa. The Keynote Address and Presentation was done by Dr. S. A. Khan followed by Presentation by Dr. K Chandrasekaran, Professor & Former Dean, NITK, Suratkal. There was Presentation by Dr. B H Venkataram Pai, Joint Director, MIT, Manipal, then the presentation was by Dr. Somashekhar Bhat Professor & Head of ECE, MIT, Manipal which concluded with question and answer session. The day one ended with music and feast named SURF Banquet at BIT Lawn.

The day two began with invocation of Almighty. The guest on dais were Dr. Ken Yeang, Renowned Architect, Ecologist, Planner, Malaysia, Mr. Mansoor Khan, Renowned Film Maker, Mumbai. Dr. S.A. Khan,  Dr. Bhakti Devi, Liveability Strategist, Bangalore, Ar. Deepa Vedavyas, Ecological Architect, Harvard University, Mr. Syed Mohammed Beary,  Dr. Mahabaleswarappa P, Ar. Ashok LP Mendonca, Dr. Aziz Musthafa, Mr. Mazhar S Beary, Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi.

Ar. Ashok LP Mendonca, Pricnipal BEADS welcomed the gathering in an innovative way by showing concern on saving mother earth followed by inaugural address by Syed Mohammed Beary,  in his speech he added that one of reason for all problems is the greed and the solution would be sustainable development and said it is the experience which makes the man perfect and not the education. And sucital happiness is paramount important not the individual happiness.

Mansoor Khan, Renowned Author, ecologist and Film Maker, Mumbai presented the keynote address. In his address he said the exponential growth is the problem for resources and he has defended it. He said “deal with reality or the reality will deal with you”

The Panel Discussion on “Sustainable Urban Development” was held at International Seminar Hall. The Keynote Address and Presentation was done by Dr. Ken Yeang, he spoke about the green architecture for Sustainable Urban Development followed by Presentation by Dr. Bhakti Devi and Ar. Deepa Vedavyas .The moderator for the session was Ar. Ashok LP Mendonca followed by question and answer. The best paper and best poster awards were distributed by chairman and dignitaries on the dais.

The two days program concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Mustafa Bastikodi followed by National Anthem.
